every person has their hat, it's waiting to find you

I am so happy that I am taking part in these Workaway experiences. It makes traveling so much more enriching. After time visiting places, I really do feel like I need to work, to do something with my hands. I met Sabri, artist and creator of FeltThink. He is so talented, making the most interesting objects  out of felt. I stayed with him for a week, felting hats. It's tough work!

The day starts with checking for the latest orders, and then making those hats that day! Sabri is the creative vision. He'll start by thinking of his creation, each hat a special order for the client. He lays out the design, following a basic shape/size template he's created. Then adds the colored felt on top, adding the personality.

I enjoyed watching his process for this. He isn't afraid to make a new hat, experiment, or go off his path to discover something new. One thing that sticks out in my mind is him saying "there is a hat for everyone." And that's the truth! You'd be amazed how someone can put on a bunch of these hats... and when "their" hat is on, it's THEIR hat. Undeniably the perfect fit.

Sabri uses a traditional wet-felting technique. It consists of wetting the felt with soap and water, and working the liquid throughout the material. This is where I was able to help. Each hat would take hours of handwork to get it to the right density and durability. Of course, as a beginner it would take me 8-10 hours to make one hat.

All of the hats are made of 100% natural merino wool which is hand-dyed by Sabri himself. The colors are so vivid. Everyday, I would stand and admire the library of felt colors.
