ARThills
I took part in another Workaway experience, helping an artist paint his studio out in the hills. Bodrum is a popular destination for many people and I wasn't sure if I felt like going coming after spending most of my time in small towns along the southern coast But from what I've learned on this journey, never say no to an opportunity to see more country and meet new people. There are always things that surprise you and lead you to the next enriching experience. I arrived in Bodrum on the night bus and was greeted by some refreshing rain. I found myself a nice cafe while I waited for Ender, my host to pick me up. After running some errands in the city we then drove the 20 minutes out to his residence in the hills. The landscape was so beautiful and remote. I soon realized this is exactly what I needed, some time away from the chaos and to be submersed in nature.
Ender has built a really interesting space for himself and I was happy to contribute to the development of ARThills. On the property he has built his home, studio and museum. All ran on solar energy and collected rain water. I stayed out in the studio, where I helped unpack, organize and paint. Every day I woke up to see the sunrise, took a walk on one of the most ancient roads in the area, worked, visited, evening walks with Ender and his dog, and then watched the sunset. It was such a relaxing time and filled with so much inspiration. I found myself staying up late at night, watching the stars in silence. Here I found a sense of clarity on my journey.
Week Two
Everyone knows someone who knows someone. I have been so surprised by my integration in this culture. I was introduced to Ahmet, a friend of Olças. He was a generous host who let me stay with him for a few days and took me on some excursions to some surrounding villages. The landscape on the Aegean coast is remarkable.
